Peace of Mind Therapies

Infrared Sauna

There are many benefits of Far Infrared Saunas. It helps to remove impurities from your cells, specifically the cells inside our fat where our body stores waste and harmful toxins such as cholesterol and heavy metals.

The main difference between infrared saunas and the traditional saunas is how they use heat. Traditional saunas use a single heater that is heating the air and this hot air heats the user.  In contrast, infrared saunas use advanced therapy to heat the user directly with only a small % of the heat heating the air. This results in a deeper sweat and at a lower

ambient air temperature. In fact, infrared saunas usually operate between 115° – 135°F, while traditional saunas can get up to 195°F.

You will get all of the relaxation benefits of a traditional infrared sauna along with the increased health benefits that infrared offers all at a much more comfortable temperature.  Infrared saunas are also dry saunas and many users find this makes for a more comfortable sauna session.

Benefits of an Infrared Sauna

Detoxification

The skin is one of the largest detox pathways. Infrared heat will assist the body to rid 20% toxins and 80% water compared to a traditional sauna, which only assists the body in sweating out 3% toxins and 97% water. This makes the sauna 7 times more effective at detoxing the body.

Weight Loss

Studies have shown that a 30-minute infrared sauna session allows you to burn up to 600 calories. Heart rate rises with an increased cardiac output as the body works to cool itself. As the body’s core temperature increases so does metabolic rate, causing the body to burn more cals.  Relax and boost those happy endorphins.

Boosts the Immune System

The heat tricks your body into a state of fever by increasing your core temperature. This immune response helps to build your defence mechanism, combined with the elimination of toxins excreted via sweat, this natural process builds your resistance against infection and disease.

Stress Relief

Infrared therapy reduces stress and anxiety by balancing the stress hormone in the body. Like sunbathing, infrared warmth promotes an overall feeling of well-being, good for the mind and body.

Pain Relief

Infrared heat accelerates healing and supports strains and sports injuries. Heat responsive pain (HRP) research has been shown to have therapeutic benefits by relieving back pain and arthritis, increasing blood flow and reducing inflammation to the injury site. Infrared penetrates deeply into joints, muscles and tissues as fresh oxygenated blood and nutrients reach these areas of discomfort, easing joint stiffness and pain associated with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome.

Skin Rejuvenation

Infrared can deeply penetrate the skin helping to heal skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and scaring. The heat also reaches the hypodermic fat layer thus breaking down cellulite. Skin elasticity improves helping to fight signs of ageing, giving you a healthy natural glow.

Lyme Disease

Lyme disease is on the rise and looks likely that cases will continue to increase. Infrared heat causes a powerful detoxifying effect. Lyme disease releases neurotoxins which create a wide range of symptoms, research suggests that infrared heat removes these harmful toxins accelerating the healing process.

Chromotherapy Light Colour Benefits in an Infrared Sauna

Each of the colours of the spectrum is associated with specific healing properties. Thus, by using different colours of the spectrum one can trigger changes towards better health and overall wellbeing. It is a known fact that the human body needs light for certain metabolic functions such as absorption of certain vitamins.

Infrared Sauna is not suitable for the following or need caution:

Contraindications

Medications

Individuals who are using prescription drugs should seek the advice of their personal physician or a pharmacist for possible changes in the drugs effect when the body is exposed to far infrared waves or elevated body temperature. Diuretics, barbiturates and beta-blockers may impair the body’s natural heat loss mechanisms. Some over the counter drugs such as antihistamines may also cause the body to be more prone to heat stroke.

Children

The core body temperature of children rises much faster than adults. This occurs due to a higher metabolic rate per body mass, limited circulatory adaptation to increased cardiac demands and the inability to regulate body temperature by sweating. Consult with the child’s Pediatrician before using the sauna. Persons under the age of 16 should not use a sauna

The Elderly

The ability to maintain core body temperature decreases with age. This is primarily due to circulatory conditions and decreased sweat gland function. The body must be able to activate its natural cooling processes in order to maintain core body temperature.

Cardiovascular Conditions

Individuals with cardiovascular conditions or problems (hypertension / hypo tension), congestive heart failure, impaired coronary circulation or those who are taking medications, which might affect blood pressure, should exercise extreme caution when exposed to prolonged heat. Heat stress increases cardiac output, blood flow, in an effort to transfer internal body heat to the outside environment via the skin (perspiration) and respiratory system. This takes place primarily due to major changes in the heart rate, which has the potential to increase by thirty (30) beats per minute for each degree increase in core body temperature.

Alcohol

Contrary to popular belief, it is not advisable to attempt to “Sweat Out” a hangover. Alcohol intoxication decreases a person’s judgment; therefore, they may not realize it when the body has a negative reaction to high heat. Alcohol also increases the heart rate, which may be further increased by heat stress.

Chronic Conditions / Diseases Associated with a Reduced Ability to Sweat or Perspire

Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis, Central Nervous System Tumors and Diabetes with Neuropathy are conditions that are associated with impaired sweating.

Hemophiliacs / Individuals Prone to Bleeding

The use of Infrared saunas should be avoided by anyone who is predisposed to bleeding.

Fever

An individual that has a fever should not use any type of sauna.

Insensitivity to Heat

An individual that has insensitivity to heat should not use any type of sauna.

Pregnancy

Pregnant women should consult a physician before using any type of sauna because fetal damage can occur with a certain elevated body temperature. A sauna should not be used during pregnancy.

Menstruation

Heating of the low back area of a women during the menstrual period may temporarily increase their menstrual flow, but some women endure this process to gain pain relief commonly associated with their cycle whereas others simply choose to avoid sauna use during that time of the month.

Joint Injury

If you’ve had a recent (acute) joint injury, it should not be heated for the first 48 hours after an injury or until the hot and swollen symptoms subside. If you have a joint or joints that are chronically hot and swollen, these joints may respond poorly to vigorous heating of any kind. Vigorous heating is strictly contra-indicated in cases of enclosed infections be they dental, in joints or in any other tissues.

Implants

Metal pins, rods, artificial joints or any other surgical implants generally reflect far infrared waves and thus are not heated by this system; nevertheless, you should consult your surgeon prior to using an Infrared Sauna. Certainly, the usage of an Infrared Sauna must be discontinued if you experience pain near any such implants. Silicone implants or silicone prostheses may absorb far infrared energy or may be warmed by the far infrared waves. Since silicone melts at over 200°C (392°F), it should not be adversely affected by the usage of Infrared saunas. It is still advised that you check with your surgeon and possibly a representative from the implant manufacturer to be certain.

It’s advised that you consult with GP if you have the following – High Blood Pressure (consult GP for consent) – if controlled & Adrenal Suppression

In the rare event, you experience pain and/or discomfort, immediately discontinue sauna use.

How about adding the sauna to the end of another therapy like KCR for instance? The price is reduced when they are taken together.
